Match Report | Battle of Oxford Road

Written by club volunteer, Leon Higgins.

University of Manchester 12-7 Manchester Metropolitan University

The University of Manchester claimed a third Battle of Oxford Road title winning a thrilling contest in front of 550 people at Planet Ice Altrincham.

The first match between the university’s since 2013, saw Manchester Met take the lead in the 6th minute with the A team link up of Anrich Landman assisting Kai Gennoe. UOM then replied a minute later through Jaeyoon La before Dominik Weaver put UOM ahead. Drama occurred moments later when Weaver and Chris Kelly Wong showed their passion for the fixture trading blows and getting the crowd on their feet with a massive roar going around the arena. This therefore saw both players sent to the penalty box for 5 minutes for fighting and fisticuffs. Instantly after the restart Manchester Met turned the game around with Kai Gennoe equalising before Anrich Landman scored off a power play to put Met back into the lead. Such as the nature of this exciting first period UOM responded with 2 goals to end the period and therefore regain the lead with an Oliver Massey double.

The University of Manchester started the second period just as they ended the first with Jake Frost doubling the UOM lead. Passion spilled onto the Ice again when Alexander Grob and Thomas Horner were sent to the box for 5 minutes for fighting. Sam Davies scored just after the game resumed before a unassisted Chris Kelly Wong power play made it 6-4. Dominik Weaver scored but the tides turned again. Kai Gennoe got his hat trick scoring off a power play before Anrich Landman got Met within 1 at the end of the second period.

The Manchester Met momentum continued and within 2 minutes of the third and final period Daniel Frewin got Met back on level terms. Just like period one and two drama occurred and this time it was a huge moment. Scenes of the famous USA v Canada Four Nations clashes last month appeared in Altrincham when UOM’s Rocky Bhala and Jake Frost who got 7 minutes in the penalty box for fighting and trading big blows with Manchester Met’s Anrich Landman who had 9 minutes to sit out while the biggest punishment of all given to Lenny Fay who was sentenced to 25 minutes in the box, ruling him out of the rest of the match. As the crowd continued to get louder, following the drama that had unfolded in front of them, Uni of Manchester retook the lead when Katya Oliver took advantage of a power play to put UOM 8-7 up and score what turned out to be the match winning goal. Within just under 2 minutes, UOM scored 4 goals to put the game beyond doubt with Jake Frost getting his hatrick, Jaeyoon La getting his second of match while Dominik Weaver got his hat trick and scored his second unassisted goal of the match to secure a dramatic and entertaining third Battle of Oxford Road title for the University of Manchester.
