METROS HISTORY

From the past to the present, discover the history of the Metros.

Originally founded in 2001 as the Manchester Metrostars Roller Hockey Club, the club entered their first team into Division 2 of the British Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) in the 2004/05 season. Early days saw the club without a permanent home rink due to the lack of suitable facilities in Manchester. The team played out of Sheffield and Bradford before moving to Altrincham, Manchester in 2007 that despite a short spell in Deeside has been the clubs home rink ever since.

Now closer to Manchester's universities, the Metros were able to introduce a B team in 2008 shortly followed by the emergence of a C team in 2010/11 and a D team in 2011/12.

The aforementioned D team folded after the 2013/14 season but recently have been revived due to heavily increased numbers in the club, coming back a decade later for the 2023/24 season!

Throughout its existence, the club's A Team have been a force in the BUIHA, winning three National Titles, three Division Titles and five Conference Titles split amongst Checking Division 1 and Checking Division 2. The Metros have also gone international to face off against foreign competition, competing in the annual Clermont-Ferrand (France) tournament and facing off in 2012 against the Thomas Bata University HC (Czechia) in front of a 2000-strong crowd.

For the majority of the clubs existence there has been no affiliation to any singular university due to the sides intake of any North-West university student/staff. After years of hard work the club gained formal affiliation with the University of Manchester at the end of the 2022/23 season - an agreement that allows for the club to grow under the guidance of the institution whilst still working extremely closely with the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford.

In 2023, the Metros entered their first dedicated Women's team into the BUIHA Women's Nationals where they reached the National Semi-Final. The team was supported and funded by the University of Manchester in an effort to get more women involved in the sport. As of 2024, the club has had a huge intake of female players with over 40% of the club being women with representation in each team, including the A / Varsity Squad.

2024/25 saw the Metros 20th anniversary of existence in the BUIHA.

The club is currently on a great path and it's next chapter is still yet to be written.

Notable Alumni

Adam Perona
The original founder of the Manchester Metros, Adam 'Del' Perona set the foundations for the club and gave it life. Since Perona's retirement from the club, there has been an award named in his honour that is given to an individual who has shown complete dedication to the club over a long period of time.

Andrew MacKinnon
Longtime Metros president, player and coach. His 266 points are the most in club history and the third most in BUIHA history. Following his Metros career, Mackinnon has gone on to
become the BUIHA's Head of Discipline alongside refereeing. MacKinnon's #98
is one of only two retired jerseys in club history.

Vladislavs Vulkanovs
Metros A all time top goals and points leader. The forward has represented his home country, Latvia, in international competitions such as the World Junior Championship (U18). He has since played in the NIHL National League, the second highest professional tier of UK hockey where he was named an assistant captain for the Sheffield Steeldogs in 2023/24.

Ethan Trickett
Whilst Ethan Trickett may have only played just one season for the club, his legacy will never be forgotten. After the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, the club received the devastating
news of his untimely death. In order to honour Trickett, the club retired his #35 at the
2024/25 home opener, a night that saw the Metros A Team score 35 goals for #35.
