Supporters must be aware of those around them - aggressive or rude behaviour will not be tolerated and failure to respect this may lead to you being removed by security.
Supporters must not attempt to enter the ice surface, players benches, penalty boxes, time-keepers box or changing rooms at any time - failure to respect this may lead to you being removed by security.
Supporters are asked to stay in their seats whilst the play is ongoing - this ensures other supporters can see and that you do not get hit by a puck that may leave the ice surface!
ICE HOCKEY RULES
Ice Hockey is a game with a lot of rules - we've picked out the most important rules you need to know!
The objective of the game is simple - score more goals than the opponent!
Game Length
The game in total is 60 minutes long and is played in 3 periods of 20 minutes (with a 15 minute break in between each period). Every time the whistle is blown (for a goal or stoppage in play), the clock stops, meaning you get exactly 60 minutes of play no matter what happens!
Penalties
Players who take a penalty, such as tripping or slashing, must sit in the penalty box for at least 2 minutes! The team of the player who took the penalty now must play with one less player on the ice until the penalty expires or the other team score!
Collisions between players are known as 'checks' - these are allowed when the player being 'checked' has the puck (unless dangerous)!
Fights between players on the ice are also allowed - players just have to sit a 5 minute penalty afterwards!
Offside and Icing
Offside is simple - the puck must go over the opponents 'blue line' before your players do! If the player goes over before the puck, the whistle is blown and play stopped, play will then resume just before the 'blue line'!
Icing is slightly more confusing - if MMU are in their own half and they shoot or pass the puck all the way down to behind UoM's net, the whistle is blown and play stopped, play will then resume in MMU's half!
Substitutions
There are 5 skaters and 1 goalie on the ice for each team during the game - players will constantly substitute with those on the bench during play. Skaters do not have to wait for a stoppage to do this and there is no limit on how many substitutions you can do!
Overtime!
If the 60 minutes ends in a draw, the game doesn't stop! The match will head to a first goal wins overtime period for 5 minutes where each team will only have 3 skaters and 1 goalie on the ice. If nobody scores in the overtime period, we'll go to a penalty shootout!
